【失去的島嶼 】 (劉梅玉 作)
【濤聲 】 (劉梅玉 作)
This project, based on local orality*, is divided on three kinds of content:
- selected words interconnecting landscapes and cultural specificities
(extracts from publications or oral stories, vocabulary specific to
militarization of the islands)
- translation of local and contemporary poetry written in Mandarin into the
local language of Matsu and audio recording of these spoken words
- field recording in public space of locals using this language
The final form of this project will be turned into an in-site installation in the military buildings.
Different audience will be facing this linguistic material : people from Matsu fluent
in this language, inhabitants unable to understand it but who can relate to it, people from outside of the islands who are foreign to this language.
Through the meanings and actual sounds of this language, patterns of memory and body perception activate an intuitive identification process. For visitors outside of Matsu, these sounds will only be considered for their structure, their musicality, their context, triggering stereotypes or narrative space, the meaning being more participative.
Voices : Hong-Wen Liu (writer from Matsu, extracts of his work), Mei-Yu Liu (poet from Matsu, translated poems).
Note : the current online version is a sketch for the future creation.
* The local language of Matsu is also spoken in Eastern Fujian language but is not common in the rest of Taiwan.
